heavy duty packaging boxes

Proper heavy duty packaging boxes use strong double wall corrugated board to carry weighty, fragile or awkward goods without bulging, sagging or bursting in transit. Custom Postal Boxes, a project of Vertex Packaging based in Wolverhampton, makes heavy duty packaging boxes to your size and specification for demanding UK despatch and storage work.

What makes heavy duty packaging boxes strong

Strength comes from the board, the box design and the way the load sits inside, in that order. Double wall corrugated board contains two fluted layers bonded between flat liners, which makes the walls far stiffer than single wall board and much better at resisting the crushing pressure of parcels stacked above.

Our heavy duty shipping boxes and double wall shipping boxes are built on that principle and can be made to the internal size your goods need, rather than forcing heavy items into a near fit that strains every seam.

Board grade is only part of the answer

A smaller box in a given grade is stronger than a larger box in the same grade, because the walls have less distance to span. Keeping the box close to the size of the load therefore adds strength for free.

How stacking load travels through a box

When boxes are stacked, the weight of the upper boxes travels down through the corners and vertical walls of the boxes below, not through the contents. Aligning boxes directly above each other, keeping the heaviest at the bottom and avoiding overhang beyond a pallet edge all help that load path stay straight.

Where heavy duty packaging boxes are used

Trades and online sellers reach for these boxes for ceramic and glass goods, bottled products, metal parts, tools, small appliances, books in quantity and any order where the contents are dense for their size. They are also the sensible choice for storage that will be stacked for months, because board that performs for a single journey may slowly deform under a constant load in a warm storeroom.

For lighter work, our single wall corrugated boxes may be enough, and comparing the two honestly saves material where heavy board is not needed. Tell us the weight and fragility of your typical load and we will point you to the grade that matches it.

Packing and posting heavy loads safely

Place the heaviest items in the centre of the base, cushion anything fragile on every face and fill gaps so nothing can build momentum inside the box. Close the flaps without forcing them, tape along every seam and add a band of tape around the box in both directions for very heavy contents.

Carrier limits still apply however strong the box is. Under the Royal Mail size and weight guidance a medium parcel can weigh up to 20 kg and measure up to 610 mm by 460 mm by 460 mm, and heavier items need a different service. Our cardboard shipping boxes range covers the wider sizes if your heavy goods are also bulky.

Ordering boxes for heavy goods

Share the internal size you need, the weight of the heaviest load, what the contents are and whether parcels will be stacked or stored. Printing is available for handling marks, branding and contents information, and free design support helps place those marks where tape will not cover them. Pricing depends on size, material and quantity, low minimum order quantities apply and UK delivery is free.

Request a specification and price through our contact page for a quote and include a photograph or description of how you pack now if you are having damage problems. Often the fix is a combination of a closer size and a stronger grade, and we would rather solve the actual failure than simply sell thicker board.

FAQs

Do I always need double wall board for heavy items?

Not always, but dense or fragile loads usually justify it. A compact single wall box can carry a modest weight if the contents are robust and the parcel will not be stacked. Once loads become heavy, valuable or fragile, double wall board gives a clear margin of safety. Tell us the weight and what the item is, and we will recommend the lightest board that still protects it properly.

How much weight can a heavy duty box hold?

There is no single figure, because safe load depends on the board grade, the box size, how evenly the weight is spread and how the parcel is handled. A smaller double wall box packed tightly will outperform a large one packed loosely. Giving us your heaviest typical load lets us specify a box for that duty instead of relying on a general claim.

How should I pack a box that will be stacked?

Fill the box fully so the walls are supported from inside, keep the heaviest contents at the base and centre, and close the top flat without bulging. Stack finished boxes in straight columns with the heaviest at the bottom and no overhang at the edges. Where stacking is heavy or long term, tell us in advance so the board grade can be chosen for that pressure.

Can heavy duty boxes be printed?

Yes. They can carry your logo, handling guidance, contents labels and safety marks just like lighter cartons. Print is planned around tape lines and edges so important information stays visible after the box is sealed. Pricing depends on size, material and quantity, and our free design support will check the artwork before production.
